FUN. ANGLE. Seriously, if you're feeling brave, TRYYYY IIIIT. I probably made that back leg a little... uh... angular, but whatever, I love this thing. Also Lucky wanted a background, and I couldn't just say no.

It was frustrating, really.

As a young foal, Dorado (or Lucky, nicknamed when he was born nearly a month prematurely and was likely close to death) was under the impression that he was much larger than his tiny body dictated. He would constantly get into fights he couldn't win; we were foolish enough to hope that such fire would fuel his fight on the racetrack. No such luck.

By the time he got into training, Lucky was subdued, finding comfort in people rather than other animals, and he more closely resembled the stable dogs than his already-famous demon of a half-brother, Awry. However, with talent in his family such as Awry's, Veridical's, and his sire line's--which traced to Bite the Bullet through his sire Gold Bullet--giving up on Lucky's career as a racehorse was out of the question. But he seemed uninterested in running a lick when there was love to be had from the bipedals in his immediate surroundings.

Like big brother, the flashy buckskin was brought to Saratoga for his debut. Immediately, he drew a crowd, but unlike Awry, who had initially reacted violently to the yelps, hollers and flashbulbs, Lucky watched the throng with a quiet curiosity which gradually became genuine interest. During schooling sessions in the paddocks, he tried to veer off course and snuffle the hands of photographers, and quickly became a crowd favourite for his lovable nature. Nevertheless, he was here to race, and finally entered in a six-furlong maiden special weight in July.

He didn't pick up his feet for four furlongs, bounding along in last, cruising on a loose rein while his connections looked on in disappointment. But then, when he rounded the turn, something a little surprising happened: the crowd raised their voices, and Lucky accelerated. In that order. He only really ran for the final sixteenth of a mile, but the buckskin paint passed six of his nine rivals in that distance and was moving like a tiny freight train at the wire. Looks were exchanged across the grandstand: could he be special, too?

Lucky was entered next in a seven-furlong MSW, also at Saratoga, in September; he'd been given a bit of a break to try and figure out his affinity for the crowd and its noise, and his trainer thought she had it: he associated people with love and comfort, and had learned that their cries meant that they were happy. He was only reacting to their emotion, but we thought that perhaps he could learn to love racing and its battles like he'd shown he could as a newborn. Indeed, in his second race Lucky improved, finishing third but passing his rivals on the gallop-out. In an eight-furlong race at Belmont the next month, he moved up again, only second this time after losing a photo finish by a short head. Galloping out, he was nearly impossible to pull up.

And that was really it for us. He was entered next in the GI Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland: we thought him more than ready for the 8.5 furlong test, and he proved us right. With the crowd cheering him on, Dorado, son of Gold Bullet, seared the final furlongs and posted a half-length victory in 1:41 3/5, breaking his maiden in the highest of company.

The Breeders' Cup Juvenile on the mud at Churchill was next. Early in the race, Lucky's tiny golden frame skipped over the slop, and around the turn he began to pick off his rivals one by one. Two of the speed horses were still going strong when the field turned for home, and Lucky was about to separate himself from the also-rans and take aim at the frontrunners. He flew down the stretch and sliced through their lead bit by bit, only to lose the photo and finish third by a nose and a head.
